What is a Blog?

It's a strange name, blog. But what is a blog? Blog is short for Web Log, hence the name bLog. So how did these blog things come about? Well...

Possibly the most famous log of all comes from Star Trek, and the eternal voice of William Shatner, AKA Captain Kirk...

So a log is a journal. A web log is a web journal, a term supposedly first coined by the US writer Jorn Barger back in late 1997 and then shortened to "blog" in early 1999 by a guy called Peter Merholz. The rest, as they say, is history.
