Co-op Ad Network

CHMOD 777

If you're looking at the network and wondering what on earth CHMOD 777 is, it's a Unix change mode command, hence CHMOD. The network requires that with the ad_network_ads.txt file "The web server user should have write permissions to this file" and CHMOD 777makes the file writeable.

Remote file permissionsSo what is CHMOD 777? CHMOD 777 means that all the boxes are ticked on the Remote file permissions, just like in the box here.

And how do you do set the remote file permissions? The only way I know how to do this is with the excellent WSFTP FTP software from Ipswitch, which has been in my toolkit since I first started on the web. Simply upload your ad_network_ads.txt file to the server, then right-click on the file Once you have upload the ad_network_ads.txt and select chmod (UNIX) from the drop-down.

Then you'll see the "remote file permissions" box, tick everything and hit OK. That's it.
