Today’s the day, 25 years ago, that 22i Design was formed.
Back on the 5th September 2000 I’d been doing graphic design and then designing and building websites since 1998. But I wanted to formalise my skills into a business. I’d managed and run the Manta World website for a couple of years and was asked to build websites for a Karate club and a Reiki practitioner. So, with three websites already in my portfolio, that was enough to really start my self-employed side-hustle.
And so I came up with the name 22i Design.
It was and always has been a small scale project, serving small businesses with a lot of domain name registration and management, website hosting, and email services. But what about the design, you ask? Well I used to offer a lot more graphic design, and then website design, plus all the content and blog writing services to fill up the sites. There’s also been an absolute ton of SEO work too, with every project.
So with 22i Design being initially a design-led business, the name was good for many years. But after the demise of Macromedia’s Fireworks, its acquisition by Adobe, and its subsequent closure of licencing servers, I was without my valuable and high value graphics design package. Of course, I should be using the latest subscription model Adobe Creative Suite, but that model is expensive unless you’re making a mint from design work.
And with the admission that design was not me, I added digital to the business name, so 22i Design naturally morphed into 22i Design & Digital. It’s still 22i Design it’s just now the digital aspect that’s always been here is now recognised.
