Celebrating 22 Years of WordPress

22 Years of WordPress - Happy Birthday

From Humble Beginnings to World Domination

WordPress, the world’s most popular content management system (CMS), marks its 22nd birthday today; a milestone that reflects not just its longevity, but its legacy of innovation, community, and empowerment for creators everywhere. Happy birthday, WordPress/

A Journey That Began in 2003

WordPress was officially launched on 27th May 2003, by Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little. Born from the ashes of the b2/cafelog project, WordPress initially started as a simple blogging platform with a mission to make online publishing accessible to everyone. The early versions were minimalist, offering features like a new admin interface, XHTML-compliant templates, and a texturize engine to improve typography.

Evolution from Blogging Tool to Web Powerhouse

In its first years, WordPress was primarily a blogging tool. It was a perception echoed by early adopters who compared it to alternatives like Blogger. But the platform’s real transformation began in the mid-2000s. By 2005, WordPress introduced themes and a revamped user interface, setting the stage for broader website creation. The plugin system, launched in 2004, opened the door for limitless customisation and functionality.

It was around this time that I’d already decided upon using Joomla CMS but I was still using WordPress for strictly blogging.

Between 2006 and 2010, WordPress secured its trademark, revamped its admin experience, and began its evolution into a full-fledged CMS. Usability improvements, one-click updates, and built-in plugin installation made it more accessible to beginners and powerful for developers.

Key Milestones in WordPress History

So what have been the milestones in this 22 year journey then?

  • 2003: WordPress 0.7 launches as a fork of b2/cafelog.
  • 2004: Introduction of the plugin architecture, allowing users to extend functionality.
  • 2005: Themes system and new admin interface debut.
  • 2008: Major admin redesign for improved usability.
  • 2012-2015: Responsive design, media manager, and REST API arrive, making WordPress even more versatile.
  • 2018: Gutenberg block editor revolutionises content creation, enabling drag-and-drop site building.
  • 2023-2025: Full Site Editing comes out of beta, performance updates, and continued refinements keep WordPress at the forefront of web technology.

Of course, there were some upsets last year in the spat with host WPEngine, but we’ll skim over that for the sake of positivity.

Why WordPress Remains the Top Choice

WordPress’s appeal is rooted in its flexibility, ease of use, and vast ecosystem:

  • Ease of Installation: Modern hosting providers enable quick setup, with features like daily backups, staging environments, and built-in security.
  • Themes & Customisation: Thousands of themes, both free and premium, allow for unique, professional designs. Agencies often build custom themes for clients, ensuring both performance and individuality.
  • SEO Friendliness: Out-of-the-box, WordPress is SEO-ready. Plugins like Yoast SEO and Rank Math make optimisation even easier.
  • Extensibility: With over 60,000 plugins, users can add nearly any feature, from ecommerce (WooCommerce) to advanced analytics.
  • Open Source & Community: Built on the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), WordPress is free, open source, and supported by a passionate global community.

It has been mentioned that WordPress is the most hacked CMS in the world, but when you’re the most popular, that’s purely statistical. WordPress is extensible in security too, just ask us and we’ll help you secure your WordPress website.

Impressive Stats After 22 Years

And what of WordPress’ reach in its 22 years of world wide web service?

  • Powers over 43% of all websites on the internet.
  • Holds a 63.5% share of the CMS market as of 2023.
  • Used by 30% of the world’s top 10 million websites and 73% of the top 100 sites.
  • Over 60,000 plugins available in the official repository.

On that last point, just because there are over 60,000 plugins, it doesn’t mean you should try or install them all. We recommend using as few as possible and we have a base list of essential plugins.

A Platform for Everyone

WordPress really has democratised web publishing, making it possible for individuals, small businesses, and global enterprises to create and manage their online presence. Its open-source nature and active community have fostered an ecosystem where developers, designers, marketers, and end users thrive together.

We’ve experienced numerous other CMS such as Joomla, Drupal, Webflows, Duda, and WIX, but WordPress is by far the most professional and well supported CMS. We’ll work with (almost) anything but recommend WordPress every time.

Looking Ahead

As WordPress enters its 23rd year, it continues to evolve. Embracing new technologies, improving performance, and expanding what’s possible on the web. Whether you’re building a simple blog, a complex ecommerce site, or anything in between, WordPress remains the trusted foundation for millions.
